“We must be willing to let go of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” — Joseph Campbell
Carl G. Jung believed that transformation is a central component of a well-lived life. Ideally, we confront difficult situations or positive opportunities for growth with open minds, prepared to face new challenges and eager to become who we know we’re meant to be. In reality, transformation is hard work and can feel very stressful.
My own story has offered many opportunities for transformation. In 2005, I was living in the American Midwest, close to where I’d grown up, married, with two children and a corporate career I loved. I felt settled and happy, certain I knew how my life would unfold. When my husband unexpectedly got the opportunity to take a two-year assignment in Australia, I threw caution to the wind, took a short-term leave of absence from my job and leased our house. Twenty years, six international moves, and many experiences later, we’ve landed in Switzerland, and my life has looked entirely different to what I planned. I became a Pilates instructor and used my business background to open studios wherever we moved; I learned to speak a foreign language; I drove on the left-hand side of the road; I found a way to volunteer in each community in which we’ve lived; I developed close relationships with people from many different cultures. Now I find these various chapters of my life are synergistically melding together, as if each were a necessary part of a whole…the life that was waiting for me.
But again, transformation is difficult. My husband, sons and I joke that our family motto is: ‘Growth is struggle and struggle is growth!’ Jungian psychology has been a wonderful help to me along the journey, so much so that it’s a major reason why I feel called to become an analyst myself.
Jung also believed that the path to transformation lies within our unique psyches. Analysis is a chance to explore — compassionately and creatively — all of the wisdom that is within you but perhaps not given enough credit in your daily life. Regardless of your specific situation, by discussing dreams, using imagination, expressing emotion and considering new narratives, you will find your way on the path to whatever life is calling you forward.
I have a private practice in Vevey, Switzerland, easily reached by train from Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux. I look forward to hearing your story and witnessing your transformation.
